this project explores the relationship between the earth, the body, and ancestral memory; the concept of muscle memory expanded to cover locations, that our bodies remember the earth upon which we first walked, and that of our parents, and our parents' parents. the idea that the earth of your ancestors can recognize you, and you recognize it, without their direct intervention and after periods of distance and estrangement.
the content of this piece is taken from my journals the first time i returned home to malaysia as an adult in 2018. taking writing and sketches from my first trip back to my grandparents' home, i gave them physical representation through a 'book' made with earth pigments and handmade paper. my material explorations involved paper sheet-forming and working with natural dyes, earth pigments, and soy milk. all of the colour you see was made with natural materials by hand. all text and imagery is original, with the exception of two pages containing words from the essence of gita, a revelation of the god krishna from the bhagavad gita that sits in my babaji's study in seremban.
